Makeup is an essential ritual for most women. From morning to night, they put color on their faces to feel beautiful, fresh and confident. Some can’t even live without it! What happens to your skin when you don’t remove your makeup?

In contact with the air and with your face, all the cosmetic products you use on a daily basis become contaminated with bacteria that cause the formation of microorganisms on your skin. If you don’t remove your makeup every night, your skin becomes clogged and impurities proliferate. Your complexion can even look dull and gray, not to mention that excessive use of makeup quickly leads to the accumulation of blackheads, pimples, and wrinkles.

Without deep cleansing and proper care, the skin ends up losing collagen and elasticity. Result: the skin aging process is accelerated, since all the absorbed substances risk damaging the tone and hydration of the skin. Dermatologist Dr. Schweiger said in an interview with the Huffington Post that ” sleeping in makeup can be an unwanted exposure to free radicals“, the main cause of premature aging of the skin. If you don’t want to go bankrupt with anti-aging serums, don’t neglect the make-up removal phase!

Also, mascara and eyeliner can cause eye irritation and inflammation if not removed properly. And the lashes themselves can weaken and fall out over time. Although sometimes fatigue takes over you, force yourself not to neglect this fundamental step.

Make-up removal routine: some tips to follow

  • When you remove makeup, it is important to know what products you use to have healthy, clean and clear skin. First of all, it is a non-foaming cleanser. That is why it is necessary to learn to differentiate between cleanser and makeup remover. The first is based on water and soap, so it foams and sanitizes the skin, eliminating all the impurities that arise from pollution, dust and dirt. The second is generally oil-based, it melts into the skin to dissolve and remove all fatty substances linked to cosmetics.
  • In general, make-up removers are intended to cleanse and remove make-up from the entire face. But, in order not to attack the skin any more, they must be very mild, what is more, they must not alter the pH of the skin: these products are supposed to be pure, without alcohol, or perfume, without dyes or preservatives.
  • There are three essential products for this routine: cleansing milk, biphasic make-up remover and micellar water. The former is a fluid emulsion that is both watery and slightly oily. The milk is intended to cleanse the skin but also to moisturize it gently. Biphasic make-up remover consists of two phases: lipophilic, that is, an oily texture to dissolve make-up, and hydrophilic, a watery substance to remove residue. Just shake it before use and it is particularly well suited to heavy makeup. Finally, micellar water is an aqueous solution, composed of low-concentration hydrophilic surfactants. It is mainly applied for light foundations.
  • All the mentioned products should be rinsed afterwards.
