WhatsApp now attracts more than 2 billion users worldwide. It is surely the most popular and ergonomic instant messaging application. Easy to use, it has a wide variety of functions and tools, which are constantly evolving due to updates, in order to provide a better service to people. Among its main options are the sending of messages, calls, voice notes and video calls, but also the possibility of sharing multimedia content, emojis, GIFs, etc. If you use it on a daily basis, you have probably witnessed new features being developed over time. Like this little green circle now showing up next to conversations, in a very specific context.

Many users have noticed this famous green dot on WhatsApp next to their conversations. However, this is just one feature available in the messaging app that many of us do not use constantly. In fact, this green dot appears just when you decide to mark certain chats as “unread”.
If you want to disable this option, it is very simple:
- Enter the WhatsApp application.
- Click on the conversation where the green dot appeared.
- Then go to the three dots in the top corner.
- There you have to press where it says “Mark as read”.
- This will remove the green button.
If you want to re-enable this feature, you can do the same procedure without any problem.
Why does an at sign (@) also appear in a WhatsApp chat?

During group conversations, you’ve probably noticed that the at sign appears frequently. It is WhatsApp’s way of showing you that in some way someone is talking about you in that group and you may be interested in reviewing the message in case you want to respond.
Specifically, when an at sign appears next to a chat on WhatsApp, it means someone mentioned you or replied to one of your messages in a group. These mentions are therefore available in the discussion groups and are made by typing @ in a chat followed by the person’s name. Replies to your messages also show the same sign.
Why is it a smart tool? This is a way to save time by distinguishing where your attention is needed in the group, especially if the discussion contains hundreds of posts. So you won’t have to go through all of them. When you open chat with pending mentions, a floating button with an at sign will take you directly to the last mention, making it quick and easy to reply.
