How to clean and disinfect kitchen towels in minutes?

For an economical, ecological and fast washing of your clothes, there is an effective trick that will leave them clean as new. For this you will need the following ingredients:

  • Marseille soap
  • A microwave safe bag.
  • 2 teaspoons of citric acid
  • 50 ml of water

Start by rubbing your lightly dampened kitchen towel with Marseille soap, which is very effective at loosening and removing dirt. Let the product act, then fold the clothes and put them in a plastic bag. Mix the citric acid with the water, and then pour it all over the cloth inside the bag.

Put the unsealed bag in the microwave for 2 minutes. At the end of this period, use a pair of tongs to remove the bag from the oven so as not to burn yourself. Wait a few minutes for the cloth to cool, then place it in a bowl of cold water and rinse it to remove any soapy residue. Lay it out to air dry. Note that it is possible to replace Marseille soap with dishwashing liquid or even black soap to clean and remove bad odors from kitchen towels.. Plus, this microwave cleaning technique is just as effective for scrubbing and sanitizing your dishwashing sponge.

Why put kitchen towels in the microwave?

Microwaving sponges and dish towels has been scientifically proven to kill 99% of germs. According to research, the microwave can quickly and effectively sterilize kitchen rags, carriers of bacteria and viruses that can cause foodborne illness. Although most people put their dish towels in the washing machine, it would be better to put them in the microwave to decontaminate them and not just clean them.

How to machine wash kitchen towels?

If you still want to clean your kitchen towels in the washing machine, you must pre-wash first to remove stubborn stains. There are several ways to do it without using bleach.

  • Clean with Aleppo soap, known to be a perfect degreaser. Rub damp cloth, lather, then rinse;
  • Use baking soda paste to scrub tough stains, and then spray white vinegar on them. Leave to act for a few minutes, rub again and rinse;
  • Strip fabric with hydrogen peroxide to restore clothing to its former whiteness, then rinse;
  • Dip the kitchen towel in a mixture of water and soda crystals and let the product act for a few minutes before rinsing.

The time has come to put the kitchen towels in the washing machine.. For this, the recommended temperature is 60 °. If you have white and very stained clothes, you can opt for a 90° wash.

It would be useless to wash kitchen clothes at 40°, since bacteria survive at this temperature and, therefore, cleaning will be unnecessary.

You should also know that the use of ammonia can be particularly effective in loosening and sanitizing your kitchen towels. However, it should be used with caution by wearing gloves when handling it. Therefore, you can add half a glass of ammonia with the usual detergent.

As you may have understood, cleaning and disinfecting kitchen towels is an important step to prevent the spread of bacteria and preserve your health. A healthy lifestyle requires above all the use of effective cleaning methods.
