How to turn off the laptop screen, without closing the lid?
Laptops offer the ability to turn off just your screen, without turning off the entire system. Turn off computer screen using keyboard shortcuts
To turn off the computer screen manually, you can use keyboard shortcuts. That’s why, hold down the Fn key, located between the Ctrl and Alt keys and simultaneously click the button used to start the computer. Thus, just the screen turns off. Your computer will stay on and you will be able to find your files just as you left them. To turn the screen back on, simply click the button used to start the computer.
Turn off the screen using computer settings
In addition to manually turning off the computer screen, it is possible schedule its extinction. The screen will turn off after a specified period of inactivity. For Windows 10 systems, go to “Settings” and click the first icon on the left called “System”. Then go to “Power and sleep”. You will see settings dedicated to the screen, and that will allow you to choose after how many minutes of inactivity, your screen can turn off, in case of battery operation, but also when it is connected to the electrical network.
In this menu it is also possible to choose after how many minutes of inactivity the computer can go to sleep. Standby allows us to keep the PC on, while reducing its energy consumption. Then the screen turns off, but our apps stay open, so we can pick up where we left off. What is the difference between turning off the screen and putting the computer to sleep?
There is a difference between screen standby and computer standby. In the first case, only the screen is off when the computer is not used for a few minutes. On the other hand, when the computer goes to sleep, the screen cuts out. and the PC is put into “sleep” mode. This reduces battery consumption without having to turn off the computer.
In laptops we also find the hibernate option. This uses less power than sleep mode, but Recovery takes a little longer. On the other hand, like sleep mode, hibernation allows you to resume work where you left off. without losing our data. To integrate this mode into the Power menu, go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings. On the left, select “Choose what the power buttons do”, then under “Shutdown settings” you will find the “Hibernate” box, check it and save the changes.
