The clever trick to keep cilantro fresh for up to a month in the fridge

adminSeptember 21, 2022

Coriander is an aromatic plant widely used in the kitchen to flavor dishes and sauces. The only downside is that it doesn’t last very long. In fact, its leaves start to turn brown and become soft after a few days. Find out how to keep cilantro fresh for up to two weeks in the fridge with this foolproof trick.

When fresh, cilantro is distinguished by its strong aroma and bright green color. This aromatic plant has culinary virtues, but also therapeutic benefits. However, coriander does not keep for long. It loses its freshness after a few days. With that said, here’s a tip to make your seasoning plant last.

To keep this aromatic herb fresh in the fridge, first take an empty jar and clean it properly. Fill it halfway with water and set it aside. Then make sure the cilantro is dry. If you notice traces of moisture, lightly rub your plant with absorbent paper, so as not to break the leaves. Keep in mind that even if you notice your herbs are dirty, avoid washing them, as they must be kept dry. Refrigerate as is. You can rinse them before use. Next, cut the ends of the stems about 3 cm with a sharp knife so as not to break the stems. Then quickly dip the twigs into the jar, to prevent the exposed part from starting to dry outas if you were going to place a bouquet of flowers in a vase. Make sure the rods are in contact with the water.

Then cover the jar you put your twigs in, with a plastic bag. The bag should be wide enough not to press down on the leaves. You should also cover the opening of the jar and the leaves, so that the air does not dry out the plant. You can use a rubber band to hold the bag around the jar.

Cilantro likes freshness. Therefore, you will like it in the refrigerator. Check the jar from time to time to prevent your herbs from drying out. If you notice that the water begins to cloudy, change it, because coriander needs fresh water. To do this, carefully remove the strands, rinse the container before putting it in clean water and put the strands back in place. If after a few days you notice that the coriander leaves turn a dark green color, this means they start to deteriorate. If the leaves turn brown, your plant is dead. Also, feel free to throw away your weed if you notice an unpleasant odor. This means that the coriander is spoiled, and that should no longer be used. Coriander can be stored like this for two weeks.

What are some other tips to keep cilantro fresh for a long time?

Instead of storing the entire jar in the refrigerator, you can first rinse the cilantro clean by submerging the sprigs in a container containing water and white vinegar. This trick will allow you to disinfect your aromatic plant and clean it of pesticide residues. Leave to act for about 10 minutes, then rinse the coriander branches and let them drain, until they dry completely. Then wrap the cilantro in a clean paper towel or cloth, so that it covers all of the herb, then store in a resealable freezer bag. You can also place the coriander sprigs in an airtight box and then put your scented plant in the freezer.

You can also just freeze the coriander leaves. To do this, first rinse the cilantro to wash it, taking care that the water runs through all the strands. Then let the cilantro drain for a few minutes. Pat the herbs dry with a paper towel, then remove the leaves from the stems, to make them easier to use later. This will make it easier for you to dose the amount of cilantro you need when you go to cook. Use sharp kitchen shears for this. so as not to break the leaves.

Then place the coriander leaves on a parchment paper lined baking sheet. The sheets should be arranged in a single layer and without touching. Then put the baking sheet in the freezer and let it sit for 30 minutes. Thus, the leaves will be frozen enough so as not to stick to them. All you have to do is put the frozen leaves in freezer bags. Act quickly, before the leaves begin to thaw. Before closing the bag, be sure to evacuate all the air it contains. You can store the freezer bags in the freezer for up to a month. When using coriander leaves, don’t wait for them to thaw before using it. You may end up with soggy leaves.

Thanks to this trick, you can keep cilantro in the fridge for a few days and use it fresh to flavor your dishes.
