Why choose a self-cleaning cat litter?
The first reason is obviously to alleviate, at least a little, the tiresome task of cleaning your furball’s litter box very often. If you are offered to extend the cleaning of the your cat’s bath, you listen, right? Because even though cleaning the litter box only takes a few minutes, it’s a pretty daunting job that ends up taking a very long time for a week!
Then comes the economic reason. Because, yes, we are not going to tell stories, cat litter is expensive in the long run. And we’re not talking about the water and detergents used to regularly wash and disinfect your cat’s litter box. Do you have several cats at home? All the more reason to choose to use a self-cleaning litter box, because the problem is multiplied by the number of cats, inevitably…!
To do this, you will need the following:
- 2 litter boxes
- A drill and a bit
- A ruler and a pencil.
The containers must have the same dimensions around their edges, but one of the two containers must be shallower than the other. They should be able to nest inside each other, but without the bottom of the top one touching the bottom of the bottom one. Of course, you can use the container you already have to have only one copy to buy in the store. In this case, to make sure you choose a suitable container, take your own!
To choose the size of the wick, take a handful of grains of sand in your hand. Observe the average size of the grains: the holes to be made must not allow too many grains to pass through. Find the right balance and choose a bit accordingly.
You will use the ruler and pencil to measure and mark the places to make the holes in the bottom tray of your self-cleaning litter box.

Self-cleaning litter box manufacturing steps
Make the markup : Thoroughly wash and sanitize both litter boxes. Take the upper pan, the shallower of the two. Flip it over so that the bottom of the pan is facing up. Form 6 squares of approximately 8 centimeters on a side (we are not even close to 1 mm!). Inside these squares, draw columns and rows about 6mm apart. The grids thus drawn will serve as a guide for drilling the holes in the bottom of this tray. You will simply drill a hole with the drill at each intersection between rows and columns.
drill holes : Bring a vacuum closer to your work area. Take your drill and the determined bit and start drilling the holes. Be careful during this delicate step. It can be a bit tedious having to make all those little holes, but make sure it’s worth it and gather your courage! Don’t worry if your holes aren’t perfectly identical, or perfectly aligned, no one will check! The main thing is that there are enough holes of the desired size so that the sand can pass through. Do not hesitate to “draw” your vacuum cleaner as soon as there is too much drilling debris, to work to the end in the best possible conditions.
Finally, clean the tray you drilled your holes into. Put it in the bottom tray and dump your garbage inside. Place a small amount of litter in the lower tray to soak up any cat urine that may come out of the upper tray.
When you clean your new self-cleaning cat litter box, start by removing feces. Then sift the sand, stirring the perforated tray well, so that the used sand grains fall into the bottom tray. You will notice that the clean sand grains will remain on the surface, so they will continue to be used. Imagine the waste savings you’ll achieve with this system! Only the really dirty garbage will be evacuated, and you will soon notice that vYour sandbag purchases will last much longer. Plus, you’ll have, as promised, less tedious handling to do to change your cat’s litter. No more wasting time and money!
