A test was recently conducted by the magazine 60 million consumers. The goal? Know the real costs of washing. The magazine tested 20 liquid and single-dose detergents, conventional or ecological.
To compare, they are not based on the price in stores: two cans of the same capacity cannot allow the same number of washes. So what to consider? The unit price per wash.
Based on the prices of the sample products in this test, our colleagues were able to determine a range of costs per wash, i.e. 0.15 euros to 0.42 euros. The observation: Ready-to-use capsule detergents, such as tablets or capsules, have an average cost per wash of €0.28 Therefore, they are more expensive than liquid detergents that cost €0.22 on average

In addition to being easy to manufacture, a natural and homemade detergent is still a very effective ecological solution and, therefore, a serious alternative to chemicals that are harmful to health. This recipe will take 5 minutes of your time if you buy the Marseille soap flakes and 15 minutes if you grate them yourself. Finally, it is effective for washing clothes at 30°C.
Here are the ingredients:
- For 2 liters of detergent, take a large handful of Marseille soap (based on vegetable oils, without palm oil or additives).
- 1 tablespoon soda crystals
- 2 liters of water including 1 liter for heating to dissolve soap and soda crystals.
To best prepare and use this eco-friendly detergent, bring a bucket or large container to mix the ingredients, a funnel, a 3-liter bottle or container, and if you like, a blender.
To prepare your natural product, start by grating the soap into shavings. Then, in the container, pour 1 liter of boiling water with the Marseille soap shavings. Now mix until the soap dissolves. Later, add the soda crystals if you find that the water is still hot. Alternatively, you can melt the crystals in a small amount of hot water in another container. Mix or mix everything if necessary. Now transfer to a bottle and add 1 liter of cold water. Don’t fill it to the end! Now all you have to do is close the bottle tightly, shake it, and finally label it!

Before each use, you must shake your bottle (or canister).
Use your detergent after removing stains and without prewashing. Put a dose, about 15 cl in the drum of your washing machine.
You can add a few ingredients to your solution (right into the drum) like a tablespoon of baking soda, if you have whites to wash.
Finally, the Marseille soap-based detergent is perfect if this soap does not contain glycerin and if the water is soft. However, avoid this solution if you plan to clean absorbent fabrics such as washable diapers or kitchen towels: this mixture can actually waterproof the fibers of these fabrics.
