Cold weather, drafts and few hours of sunlight can affect houseplants, especially those that are not hardy. You can take certain actions to protect your vegetation. We tell you everything in this article.

The first thing to do when temperatures start to drop, is to change the location of your plants. Take home the frost-prone plants that you have on the balcony or terrace. Also be careful not to place them anywhere in the house. You can keep them near a window. to provide exposure to light, but be careful that its foliage does not touch the cold surface of the window. The leaves can thus wilt or freeze. Note that it would be better keep plants away from windows or bay windows if it’s very cold. Also protect your plants from drafts and make sure keep them away from any source of heat, namely, the radiator or the fireplace. These dry out the surrounding air and therefore also risk drying out your plants.

For fragile houseplants, it is advisable to cover them to protect them from the cold. For this, you can wrap the pots with newspaper, or cover the ground for your plants, to protect its roots from the cold and limit water evaporation. You can make a mulch based on compost, or grass, or choose to compose a more decorative mulch using fruit peels or wood chips.

To provide your plants, especially tropical ones, with a sufficient level of humidity, You can keep them in the bathroom.   • Provide plants with enough light.

Indoor plants need light for photosynthesis. If your house receives little light, especially in winter, it is recommended use artificial lighting. Green plants also need 12-14 hours of light. Flowering plants need 14-16 hours of light exposure. That said, you can Hang a lamp 30 cm above the plants. You can use a fluorescent light bulb or a horticultural lamp. On the other hand, avoid halogen bulbs that give off a lot of heat, as well as being energy intensive. Note that if the foliage on your plants begins to turn yellow, this means that they lack light.

It is also advisable to keep indoor plants in a bright room at room temperature. Avoid overheating your home to ensure the survival of your plants.
