What are the differences between powder detergent and liquid detergent? What is best for your washing machine?

adminDecember 14, 2022

As for the washing machine, when it comes to detergent, many people are often faced with a big dilemma: powder or liquid? As they say, you don’t change a winning team. So some necessarily have their preference in the field. But are you sure you are making the right decision? Such is the question. Because indeed there are significant differences between the two versions.

Whether liquid or powder, we expect a detergent to perfectly clean our clothes, removing all stains, whitening certain parts and preserving the colors of our clothes. Except that once in the supermarket, you no longer know where to turn with this profusion of detergents. Therefore, it is important to have an accurate idea of each other’s strengths and weaknesses. To guide you and help you decide, we will highlight the advantages and disadvantages of these two washing products.

Detergent: parameters to take into account

First, before we get to the heart of the matter, keep in mind that all manufacturers must adhere to strict and exacting standards for composition, formulation, performance, and packaging. And this, regardless of detergent. In addition, even before getting to know the product in depth, you must make sure that it meets the following criteria: adequate format, correct price, high efficacy and low dosage of contaminants/allergens.

Powdered laundry detergent

Powder detergent: the + and the –

their strengths

  • Powder detergent (small granules) is excellent for removing mud, grass and blood stains. This quality is due to its surfactant content that gives it strong cleaning power. Therefore, if the stains are rebellious and persistent, the powder version is the most suitable.
  • The other benefit of powdered laundry detergent is that it protects white clothes. Few people know that it contains enzymes and bleaching agents. Thus, for example, to combat yellow stains on bedding, powder is the ideal solution.
  • The powder does not contain preservatives and does not require a large amount of rinse water, as it does not foam very well.
  • Thanks to its whitening and anti-limescale formulation, it is especially effective in eradicating dirt from cotton and giving shine to white clothes.
  • A box of powder detergent can cover more than 100 washes: if you want to save money, this is your product. In fact, it may take several months before you buy a new box. As a bonus, its powdered form allows it to withstand a long shelf life. In general, the powder detergent is cheaper than the liquid format.

their weaknesses

  • Due to its high pH, powdered detergent can irritate sensitive skin. In order for it to dissolve effectively in clothes, washing must be done at a high temperature. However, there are always some residual particles that can cause negative reactions, resulting in pimples or itchiness. If you have overly sensitive skin, it is better to go for the liquid version.
  • It should not be abused during the machine wash cycle: if you have a heavy hand, the clothes will be altered by product residues. Thus, you will be forced to wash your clothes again.
  • It is also not recommended to wash clothes by hand. Since it does not dissolve easily at low temperatures, powder detergent is not suitable for delicate items.
  • Powdered detergent is much more efficient when washed at high temperatures (60°C and above), which means higher energy consumption and a higher electricity bill.
  • Although this detergent is excellent for protecting white or light-colored garments, it is not suitable for preserving bright colors in clothing.

Liquid detergent: the + and –

Its advantages

  • The liquid version is especially indicated for garments with intense colors, synthetic fabrics and light stains.
  • Dissolves completely and quickly in cold water, leaving no residue on clothing.
  • It is ideal for washing cycles at low temperatures (up to 40°).
  • Liquid detergent consumes less energy, since it does not require a high temperature.

its disadvantages

  • The liquid detergent does not contain bleaching agents or anti-limescale properties.
  • Less economical than the powdered version, it’s also not really eco-friendly, as its packaging is usually plastic, which is less environmentally friendly.
  • Many liquid detergents contain allergens, dyes, and fragrance additives. These preservatives may present an allergy risk. But there are some that are certified allergen-free, so be sure to make a greener choice.

Would liquid detergent be more recommended?

First of all, liquid detergent is perfect for oil and grease stains. In fact, this detergent contains ethoxylated alcohol, which is particularly effective against these substances. The other advantage, of course, is that it is more suitable for delicate parts and sensitive skin. And since the liquid dissolves very easily, even in cold water, it is especially recommended for washing machines. As a bonus, it leaves no residue in the machine or on clothes. Not to mention, the liquid preserves the intensity of brilliant colors and achieves high-performance results without pre-washing at low temperatures.

The only negative point: as mentioned above, the liquid version is more expensive than the powder version. Also, it runs out faster and its packaging is not very good for the environment.

Finally, the most important thing to remember is that there is a smart choice to make based on your own needs and washing habits. And remember, only efficiency should prevail over the rest. Tell yourself that there is no perfect detergent on the market, as we have seen above, they all have strengths and weaknesses. Nothing prevents you from alternating the formulas if necessary. The most important thing remains to always read detergent labels before buying them to get as much information as possible.

NB : If you go for eco-friendly detergents, both cheap and highly concentrated, be sure to always keep them out of the reach of children and pets. Its tablet format can easily lead to domestic poisoning.
