Accidentally dropping your mobile phone into water is a very common situation. Fortunately, when we react immediately, we can avoid the worst. Typically the most popular solution is to submerge the phone in a bowl of uncooked rice. It stays that way for a few hours, or even overnight. And the next day, with any luck, the device is saved.

However, there is no scientific proof that this method always works. And that’s not all: specialists even warn you against this practice that can damage your device. Don’t worry, there are other ways to dry your phone without risking damaging it. Discover them!

Why aren’t rice grains the best solution to dry out your phone?

Water remains the sworn enemy of all electronic devices. Anything made of electronic circuitry, if accidentally soaked or wet, can quickly be damaged or stop working altogether. The mobile phone is no exception, unless you have a waterproof model, most of these phones are not resistant to contact with water. Unfortunately, no one is immune from these types of incidents. Also, when the device slips in the sink, dips in the pool, or falls into the toilet bowl, the user’s first reaction is to place it in a container or bag filled with rice grains.

This popular trick has often proven itself. Except that it is not without danger and can cause a lot of consequential damage. According to urban legend, rice perfectly absorbs moisture. False. It would even be much less effective than other products, such as kitty litter. Therefore, the drying will not be as efficient as you expected. Even less so if your laptop has already accumulated chlorine or sea salt residues, and even worse, the dust particles from the grains can sneak inside the device and alter some of its components. Not to mention that starch can also do damage by getting into your mobile. Result: if the rice does not prevent oxidation and damage internal components, your laptop will eventually stop working properly or die, even if it seems “saved” at first glance.

What solutions to adopt if the phone falls into the water?

So what to do in this case? What are the other solutions to adopt urgently?

These are the steps to follow:

  • First of all, unless it has already shut down on its own, the first thing you should do is shut down your laptop as soon as possible. Then remove the case, and then the SIM card. Do not shake it and leave the card drawer open.
  • Thoroughly clean the exterior of the device with a material that absorbs water well. Also clean the battery with a soft cloth or clean towel.
  • You may not know it, but silica gel sachets are great at absorbing moisture. They are also found in bags or new shoe boxes. If you have some on hand, put it on your cell phone and let it sit for a few hours.
  • This idea will seem a bit simplistic to you, but letting the Smartphone air dry is more effective than you thought. Just lay it out on a flat surface, on a paper towel. It prefers a dry and warm space (not too hot, of course, to avoid overheating).
  • To speed up the drying process, feel free to install it near a fan. Let it air dry for at least 24 hours (preferably 48), before turning it back on.
  • Naturally, if all your attempts are unsuccessful, you are left with the option of a professional. Take your device to a specialized mobile phone repair service.

Caveat

  • Above all, avoid drying your Smartphone with a possible source of heat, such as a hair dryer for example. It is very likely that you will damage it more.
  • Do not attempt to remove the device from the water if it has slipped while still connected to a power source. Disconnect the charger first, then pick up your mobile carefully. Otherwise, you risk receiving an electric shock.
  • Do not venture to disassemble your Smartphone, unless you are an expert in the field.
