How to remove the ring stuck on the finger?

adminJanuary 21, 2023

Unusual dryness, fluid retention, weight gain, sudden swelling… There are many reasons for a ring to get stuck on your finger. It can happen to anyone, man or woman. Most of the time, soapy water or an oily liquid can quickly do the trick. But sometimes the jewel is more recalcitrant and categorically refuses to withdraw. Before you panic, know that there are several solutions to try. Here are a few.

The dental floss trick to remove a stuck ring

First, when your wedding ring suddenly gets stuck and refuses to come off, dip your hand into a bowl of ice water or under a stream of very cold water. This way your fingers can deflate and it will be easier for you to remove it. But if you feel like the issue is tricky, to quickly remove a ring stuck on your finger, all you need is a bit of dental floss. The operation is simple: you have to slide it under the ring and hook it so that the ring slides over the finger. Alternatively, you can also wrap the floss tightly around your finger, right next to the ring for a few seconds. Then pull the ring over the wire and it will slide more easily onto your fingertip.

Other effective methods to remove a stuck ring

A ring stuck at finger level is common. Even jewelers are used to this type of setback: at the very moment of trying on the jewel, it is not uncommon to experience some difficulty in removing it when it is too tight. So, to overcome the problem, many techniques have been tried to facilitate the withdrawal of an alliance.

Here are some quick and reliable ways to remove a stuck ring:

To help the ring slide on more easily, try applying a greasy hand lotion like baby oil, coconut oil, butter, vegetable oil, or even Vaseline. Spread it well on your finger and put enough around the ring. Then try to remove the jewelry gently without forcing it.

When you take the ring off, don’t try to put it back on. Better to ask a jeweler for advice: it may be necessary to resize it so that it fits perfectly on your finger.

You may not have the reflex to think about it, but this method is very ingenious. If the option of the finger in ice water has not been conclusive for you, you can try this trick: fill a basin with cold water and add a bag of ice cubes. Immerse your hand in the container and leave it to act for about ten minutes. This will help reduce swelling in your fingers. If possible, keep your hand elevated while the finger cools.
After this time, try to gently remove the ring from above your finger (closer to the knuckle) by slowly twisting it. If it still won’t budge, wait 15 minutes and try again by repeating this process.

NB : Ice reduces blood flow, which will reduce swelling of the finger. But, a longer time under such icy water can cause skin problems. Also, if you feel any pain or discomfort, immediately remove your hand from the sink.

  • Last resort: cut the ring

If all the above methods do not work and the problem persists, then a more drastic solution should be tried as it is dangerous to leave a congested finger for long time. The last resort is to cut the ring so as not to aggravate the situation. Some jewelry stores are even equipped with specific tools to carry out this type of emergency operation. Be careful, for safety and to avoid taking risks, never plan to cut a ring stuck in your finger. Always seek specialized help.
