The spider plant, the plant that helps fight humidity at home

adminJanuary 22, 2023

Has humidity invaded your home and you don’t know how to fight against this inconvenience? You have exhausted all possible and imaginable remedies, but nothing helps, the humidity resists and persists. Don’t worry ! There is a natural way to defeat this scourge in your home. Although generally underestimated, certain plants can be effective in such a situation. This is the case of the spider plant, which in addition to beautifying your interior, helps to absorb excess humidity in your home. Here are some tips to make the most of the benefits of this magnificent plant.

Humidity in a home can be a real headache, unfortunately difficult to solve. As a fan of natural and inexpensive alternatives, you can count on the spider plant to purify the air in your home and regulate humidity in one or more rooms.

More commonly known by the sweet name of “Chlorophytum comosum” or phalanx, the spider plant is a plant native to South Africa, belonging to the Liliaceae family. It takes its name from its fine, slender drooping leaves. Houseplant, the phalanx is easy to maintain, especially since its roots are known to store a significant amount of water.

Decorative when moved into a pot, the spider plant is generally chosen for its aesthetics and its ability to beautify an interior. But your contribution is not limited to just that! In fact, the latter is known for its ability to fight against humidity problems in the house, decontaminating and purifying the air in the accommodation, carbon monoxide and nitrogen dioxide in particular, without forgetting formaldehyde, toluene, benzene and xylene. Therefore, this plant can act as a natural dehumidifier. So why deprive yourself of it?

Phalangera is an easy plant to maintain, especially if you don’t have a green thumb. However, you will have to provide the necessary conditions for it to see its beautiful white star-shaped flowers bloom, come spring and summer.

Where to place the spider plant?

Resistant, the spider plant adapts to all indoor temperatures, throughout the year. However, the latter is particularly suitable for temperatures between 7°C and 18°C. As you know, the phalanx needs bright light without being exposed to direct sunlight. The humidity of the bathroom can do you perfectly, as long as this room is a little bright. Also, the more humid it is inside, the brighter and more alive its foliage will be.

How often to water the phalanx plant?

As mentioned above, the spider plant stores water thanks to its roots. It is therefore useless to water it abundantly at the risk of drowning the substrate. Moderate watering in spring and summer will suffice. In this case, you will simply have to make sure that the soil is moist. In autumn and winter, you can limit the water supply, keeping the soil dry between two waterings. Finally, be careful not to leave too much water in the dish. This will prevent the roots from rotting.

How to properly maintain the phalanx plant?

However, despite the fact that it does not require constant maintenance, it is advisable to pay attention to the growth of the spider plant. Remember to clean its leaves from time to time with a soft, damp cloth. By removing the dust, you will allow a better infiltration of light. You should also know that it is good to fertilize this plant, from spring to autumn, twice a month. To do this, choose a liquid fertilizer for green plants. When winter comes, you can stop this intake.

Finally, if you notice that the tips of the leaves are getting drier, consider cutting them back just like the dead stems. This will basically indicate that the air is too dry and that the phalanx needs a little more humidity.

When to transplant the spider plant?

Being able to grow quickly, the phalanx can quickly feel cramped in its pot. If you notice that the roots are reaching more and more to the edges of the pot, you should consider transplanting it as soon as possible, in a larger pot. We recommend carrying out this operation every year, in spring. To do this, remember to follow the following steps:

  • Choose a larger pot so that the plant has the necessary space;
  • Fill the pot with well-drained soil and place clay balls in the bottom of the pot for better water flow;
  • Partially cover pot with soil;
  • Place your plant in the pot, add the necessary soil, and then water it.

As you will have understood, dear readers, the spider plant is not only a plant that helps fight excess humidity in your home, but it can also act as a leafy plant, capable of providing a beautiful aesthetic touch to your living room. .
