Where do fruit flies come from?

The downside to fruit flies is that they tend to multiply quickly. It is enough to leave an apple, a piece of vegetable, a glass of fruit juice or a jar of jam lying around and suddenly dozens of them appear. He even happens to bring them directly from the market where you bought your fruit. Keep in mind that heat and humidity greatly favor the proliferation of these small brown insects. Fruit flies are particularly attracted to the smell of fermenting food. Thus, they lay hundreds of eggs, and after just a few days, your house can easily become infested. To avoid this massive invasion and get rid of fruit flies, it is worth trying the methods offered today.

A trap to scare away fruit flies from home

All year round, but more so when temperatures rise, a swarm of fruit flies quickly appears inside your home. These insects prefer to nest in the kitchen in search of food. They are usually very attracted to fully ripe fruit. Fortunately they are not dangerous to health, but above all it is a very worrying scourge on a day-to-day basis. However, it is not necessary to use chemical insecticides to combat them. There is no need to pollute the environment!

To keep these undesirables away, you can try making a homemade trap, based on natural products. You will need ripe fruit, a bowl (or bottle), a toothpick, and a piece of cling film large enough to completely cover the utensil.

That is how:

– Put the fruit or zest in the bottom of the bowl.

– Cover well with transparent film. You can also tape it to keep it in place.

– Use a toothpick to pierce the adhesive film. Make a few holes big enough to trap these insects.

– Attracted by the smell of fermenting fruit, the flies will fall easily, but they will not be able to get out. After a few days, dispose of the contents, being careful not to release flies into the house.

Apple cider vinegar

The Effective Apple Cider Vinegar Hack

Don’t you attract flies with vinegar? It depends on which one. Contrary to what you might think, apple cider vinegar is very popular with these little beasts. Therefore, it is a very reliable remedy to catch fruit flies. The method is very easy to apply: just pour 2-3 tablespoons of cider vinegar into a glass or bowl and add a few drops of dishwashing liquid, but do not mix. Place the container near a piece of fruit or on the windowsill. After a while, the flies will quickly fall into the trap. Drawn in by the smell of cider vinegar, they won’t suspect the dishwashing liquid will be there!

Since they are very sensitive to certain smells, do not hesitate to take drastic measures by using aromatic herbs that they cannot tolerate. Thus, the smell of basil, peppermint or lavender will have a real deterrent effect. They won’t even come home anymore! To do this, if you grow it at home, place the pot with the plant on the kitchen windowsill. Otherwise, just spray essential oils based on these scents in living rooms!

Advice : To make sure that fruit flies don’t invade your home again, be sure to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly after you take them out of the store. Dispose of leftovers in airtight biowaste containers. Thoroughly clean trash cans at least once a week and take them out daily. Finally, if possible, avoid spilling fruit juices on the kitchen counter.

No more fruit flies thanks to this essential oil!

Intensely scented, essential oils perfume the home with a delicate, heady aroma. But not only. You will also take the opportunity to evict these small intruders. Here is a natural home remedy that will radically eliminate it: clove oil. As a bonus, this essential oil will also ward off other annoying insects like wasps and mosquitoes. You have two options: either spray this oil in all the places most frequented by flies, or you can simply place a few cloves next to the fruit. Make sure small insects stay away.

Some tips to follow to avoid the invasion

There are still other interesting methods to prevent the appearance of fruit flies in the kitchen. Here are a few:

– Create a draft

In the heat of the hot season, frequent ventilation is very effective in expelling these insects. Thus, the smell of ripe fruit will no longer have the same impact, the ventilation will prevent them from permeating the kitchen walls. Also, flies do not like drafts. Therefore, cross ventilation is an effective way to keep them out of the house.

– Store fruit in a cool place

Another wise way to protect the fruit (not very sensitive to cold) is to keep it in the fridge, especially in summer. Therefore, strawberries, blueberries, plums, cherries, or even pears should be kept in the fridge. This goes a long way in preventing fly invasion. As a general rule, local fruits tend to resist cold well, but not exotic fruits that must necessarily be kept at room temperature.

N.B : Ripe fruit should not be kept in the refrigerator. Therefore, you can protect them with a closed mesh mosquito net. If you don’t have any on hand, you can simply line the fruit bowl with a fine mesh bag.
