high bills? Here are the devices that consume the most even in standby mode. disconnect them

adminMarch 9, 2023

Today, we multiply household appliances at home. In other words, power consumption keeps increasing over time. To save money, most people are happy to turn off their devices at night or when they leave the house for a few days. But did you know that even “off”, some continue to consume electricity?

Finally, to reduce the bill, the real solution is to completely unplug them from the power cord. Let’s find out together what are these energy-intensive household appliances and effective ways to reduce consumption.

What appliances consume electricity even in standby mode?

In all homes, the main energy consumers are household appliances that quickly increase the electricity bill. Among them we find the air conditioning (25%), the boiler (15%), the refrigerator (14%) and the washing machine (10%). Keep in mind that they can add kilowatts even when they’re not running, just by staying plugged in. However, they are not the only ones that consume a lot of electricity: some everyday objects impact your electricity bills even when they are on standby. The microwave, for example, has a bad reputation for using a lot of energy, especially if it is very powerful. Even in standby mode, as long as it is continuously plugged in, it consumes electricity. Similar chorus on the PC and laptop side. Even if you don’t use them, as long as they stay plugged in, energy is wasted unnecessarily. Also get in the habit of unplugging your coffee maker or toaster when you’re not using it!

As you will have understood, in general, all devices in standby mode continue to consume electricity. Television, mobile, Wi-Fi, console, chargers… Remember that, even without handling them, as long as they remain connected to a plug, they end up having an impact on your annual bill. It is true that consumption in standby mode generally refers to low powers. But if you forget to unplug your devices, then we are talking about several hours accumulated over months. Inevitably, after one year, that’s a good sum: keep in mind that standby consumption is estimated at 350 kWh/year, the equivalent of 140 euros. Instead of throwing them out the window, you should have the reflex to unplug your devices as often as possible. At least at night before going to sleep and when leaving the house. To save time, why not invest in power strips with switches to install in the kitchen, living room and bedroom? Hop, all it takes is one click to disconnect all your devices from the power.

What appliances consume the most electricity?

Devices Power Consumption Percentage
Radiators and heating system. More than 30%
Water heater 10 to 15%
fridge and freezer 4 to 5%
Washer and dryer Up to 5%
Turning on 2 to 3%
Kitchen appliances 1 to 2%
computers and hardware 1%

How much does an off lamp consume?

Your chandeliers do not incur additional electricity costs when you turn them off. But did you think it was the same for your night lamp plugged into the outlet? Make no mistake, the phenomenon of “hidden consumption” exists. In standby mode, a transformer can consume almost 1 watt of electricity, or even up to 3 watts if the lamps are older. From now on, please remember to unplug the plug after use.

To reduce electricity costs, rely more on light bulbs. Low consumption LEDs are especially recommended, as they last ten times longer than incandescents and consume 75% less energy, according to specialists. Although they can be expensive to buy initially, compared to regular light bulbs, they are a long-term investment.

Should the charger be left continuously plugged into the power outlet?

Another common mistake that almost all of us make: leaving the charger plugged into the socket without any device connected. Admit that you have this habit of leaving it connected continuously. Because, indeed, it is very practical to quickly charge your Smartphone or tablet. However, although its consumption is very low, it would be wiser to disconnect it from the power supply. A charger connected to the network, without being connected to any mobile, consumes an average of 0.00002 kWh.

Thus, if you remain connected to the electrical current for 16 continuous hours a day, you will spend 0.12 euros per year. An insignificant number, yes, but that can vary depending on how many chargers there are per person at home and how long they remain plugged in.
