With the arrival of spring, when you take your tools out of the basement, you realize with horror that they are completely devastated by rust. It was to be expected, humidity is merciless with metals. Rest assured, you won’t have to exhaust yourself to solve this problem, or even go broke on expensive specific products. There are simple, effective and inexpensive home solutions to remedy this. Removing rust stains is not rocket science: your work tools will look like new thanks to the method that we are now going to offer you.

  • Take a container: pour in 300 ml of hydrogen peroxide, 80 g of citric acid and 15 g of salt.
  • Mix all these ingredients, taking care to dissolve the salt well.
  • Dive into the rusty object.
  • Rust takes a few hours to wear off.
  • After a while you will notice that the mixture begins to foam. The solution will gradually become darker and darker. That’s a good thing, because it’s proof that the rust is starting to come off.
  • Take a thermometer to measure the temperature of the solution. The actual reaction will occur when it reaches around 60°C.
  • At this point, wait another 20 minutes or so, then remove the object from the container. Wipe it again with a cloth soaked in the mixture.
  • Then, in another clean container, pour water and some baking soda.
  • Dip the object in it, then scrub it with a brush to remove any residue. No more boring and outdated look, your objects will be reborn from the ashes!

Attention : If you need to remove rust from fabrics, you will need to take certain precautions to avoid damaging your clothing. If you want to apply the solution presented above, please do a test on a hidden part first to make sure it does not cause any damage. Otherwise, opt for other gentler methods. In particular a solution based on lemon and salt. It is very effective in removing small rust stains.

Two Home Remedies You Must Try!

Finally, prevention is still the best way to avoid the ravages of rust. Therefore, it is important to preserve your metal items by keeping them dry, away from moisture. Industrial rust removers are generally used. However, most of them contain toxic chemicals, which are harmful to the environment and dangerous to small children and pets. The ideal would be to use natural and ecological products, such as white vinegar or baking soda.

If the rust stains are persistent, try white vinegar. The acetic acid in this common household product is strong enough to dissolve rust. Do you want to give your silver jewelry a beautiful shine? You have two options: you can soak your earrings, for example, directly in a bowl of white vinegar, then wipe them with a clean cloth and rinse them well. You can also mix vinegar with coarse salt in a container and then apply this solution to the rusty part. Let it sit for a while for the reaction to take effect. Then scrub gently with a sponge, rinse and dry. Be sure to always give your items a good rinse after the rust has dissolved, as vinegar residue can damage the metal.

For its part, baking soda is also a very effective cleaning and whitening agent. Thanks to its antioxidant property, your metal objects can quickly change their appearance. How to use ? Make a paste by mixing the baking soda powder with water, making sure it’s thick enough to clean rusty surfaces. Let the mixture sit for a while, then scrub with a brush. You may need to repeat this process several times. But it’s worth it, as the result is impressive!

Absolutely ! Many people don’t know it, but carbonated Coca-Cola has unsuspected cleansing properties. It allows you to remove, among other things, rust stains. All cola-based soft drinks contain phosphoric acid which interacts with iron oxide and allows the oxide to dissolve. Of course, it may take longer than the above remedies, but it’s a great alternative option when you don’t have anything else on hand.
